Would we say “money is abortion”? I doubt it, but a law that banned the spending of money would surely be a serious restriction on abortion rights (whether or not you think that the court was right to recognize such rights). A law that capped the spending of money for abortions at a small amount, far smaller than abortions often cost, would likewise be a burden on abortion rights, and dismissing this argument as “it is quite wrong to equate money and abortion” would be unsound.

I think this is a wonderful argument pointing out the fallacy of some arguments the “Campaign Finance Reform” crowd uses justify additional government control of political speech.

Tuesday, we watched The 40 Year Old Virgin staring Steve Carell. It is probably unfortunate that the last movie we watched was Wedding Crashers, because in comparison 40… fell short. Overall I enjoyed the movie and there were some extremely funny bits. The start was quite slow, but once the plot finally got underway — where Carell tries to follow the frequently faulty advise of his coworkers — I could not stop laughing. But all to soon the movie fell into typical romantic comedy cliche, with a saccharine ending. And the musical finale to the tune of Age of Aquarius was horrific.
So to sum up, The 40 Year Old Virgin is funny but has many flaws. Probably worth seeing, but don’t pay much… 3.5 stars.

On Sunday, Aly and I watched Wedding Crashers. Both of us thought the movie was fantastic. While the overall plot arc follows a fairly standard romantic comedy pattern, it does avoid many of the hacky cliches that can make movies of this genre painful. But it is the characters and the dynamic between them that makes the movie so enjoyable. Owen Wilson and Vince Vaughn play off each other quite well, adding some traditional buddy movie elements that keep the movie fast paced and lively. The Clearly family, led by Christopher Walken and Jane Seymour is wonderfully insane. And the two single daughters, Rachel McAdams and Isla Fisher, who are the targets or Wilson and Vaughn, are well acted with some surprises.
Additionally, the writer, director, and editor need to be congratulated on the start of the movie, which after a quick introduction of Wilson and Vaughn roars into a montage of several weddings that the pair crash. The scene choices and pacing are the perfect introduction to the rules and schemes the pair use while moving quickly and extremely humorous. The long string of half naked women (we watched the unrated version, so it might be different in the theatrical version) at the end of the montage was nice too.
This is a must see: Five Stars.

I finally watched Underworld: Evolution the sequel to the fantastic (5 stars) Underworld. The sequel is definitely inferior to the original, though not as bad as most of the reviews made it out to be. There is significantly more gore than the original and while I certainly won’t complain about Kate Beckinsale getting naked — the sex scene was a bit forced (and you don’t see much). The plot was pretty mediocre but some of the characters (particularly Steven Mackintosh’s Andreas Tanis) were quite well done.
Overall the movie held my attention enough to not complaint too much about it’s shortcomings. If you enjoyed the original the sequel is (just) good enough to be worth it. Three Stars
